Truly, glass ceilings were broken and history was made.

Michelle Yeoh is named Best Actress at the 2023 Oscars!

One of the most memorable parts of her speech was: "And Ladies, don't let anybody tell you you're ever past your prime."

Congratulations, Michelle Yeoh! Well-deserved!

LFLTAT: Hall Pass

"Annie Hall" is truly a breakthrough and an unforgettable film.

Aside from sweeping so many awards in 1978, including a Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress award in that year's Oscars, another thing that "Annie Hall" is known for is the film's fashion.

Diane's "masculine-feminine" dressing became a trend after the film came out, and even decades after. Even until now, this film has inspired that kind of androgynous and carefree way of dressing.

Something that I was able to recreate for less than a thousand, thanks to sale pieces from Kashieca!

The key piece is this plaid, high waist pair of pants. The waist is cinched and the legs are wide, which is something that looks very 70s.

The top is a boxy button down with a plaid detail on the sleeves. That perfectly echoes the fabric of the pants, in a very subtle way.

Together, this outfit actually rang up to less than P700! And actually, if I wanted to, I could've found a matching pair of shoes for less than P300.

But I'm happy with the ensemble as it is, so the shoe will have to be a pass for now.

Five Stars!

While watching videos on youtube, one of the suggested videos was the awarding of the Best Performance by an Actress in the 2009 Oscars.

I had to click it because I remember this is - hands down - one of my favorite Oscar Awards yet. When they assembled all the previous winners of a category to award that year's winner, that was a stroke of genius that left me in awe. And it's unmatched until today.

When the 5 former winners of Best Actress appeared on stage: Halle Berry, Marion Cottiliard, Nicole Kidman, Sofia Loren, and Meryl Streep - I swear, it took my breath away.



And when Sophia Loren said, in her beautiful Italian accent, - Meryl Streep - that just did it for me.

Of course, Kate Winslet winning for "The Reader" was cherry on top of the ice cream. I watched that film several times, and was simply entranced by her performance each time. It was an expected, and much deserved win.

I wonder when the Oscars will be able to do something this stellar again?

Dern it!

Laura Dern is one of my favorite actresses. From her earlier work in "Jurassic Park" and "I Am Sam," to her more recent turns in "Little Women" and "Marriage Story," she really knows how to light up the screen.

That's why I was thrilled that she won an Oscar this year for "Marriage Story."

And what upped her cool factor a bit more? The fact that she was in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi"!

For me, that's as awesome as winning an Oscar!

Creepy...

I've been reading articles about this breakthrough Korean film entitled "Parasite" as early as December.

They say that it's a very interesting black comedy about family and social classes. An interesting combination, if you ask me.

Then, Bonique and Mona started talking about it during our post-Christmas get-together. They were marveling at the story and how many twists and turns the film had. Which made me even more intrigued.

I've been given a copy on my flash drive and I'm so curious to see it. But they said it'll be shown in theaters again, and it's creeping back up thanks to the Oscar's push.

Maybe I'll hold out until it comes out in theaters.

Regina is king!

I've always been a huge fan of Regina King.

She has such versatility that she just disappears into her characters. She does it so well, whether it's for a comedy like "Miss Congeniality 2," or an action flick like "Enemy of the State," or feel good flicks like "Daddy Day Care," or girl-power movies like "How Stella Got Her Groove Back."

So it's such a thrill to see her walk away with the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for "If Beale Street Could Talk."

What made me a bigger fan is her speech, and how she ended it with "God is Good, All the Time!"

A King-maker indeed.

For the birds

Here's another film that has Oscars written all over it!



"Lady Bird" is one of those angsty, coming-of-age films that the Oscar jury usually gravitates towards. And seeing how Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalfe got lost in their roles, this film really has a strong chance to take flight.

Oh-scar!

It looked like a scene that was freshly torn off the Miss Universe 2015 playbook!

In a matter of seconds, the 2017 Oscars became the most talked about, most tweeted, and most face-palmed awards show in history.

I watched and re-watched the scene all over again. It was just so entertaining to see the worry and confusion on Warren Beatty's face, and the earnest cluelessness in Faye Dunaway's.

But I still love Bonnie and Clyde despite that.

Well, at least people will forget about Miss Universe now.

Something's gotta Givenchy

The first reaction I had after seeing this Givenchy dress that Cate Blanchett wore to the 2011 Oscars was a jaw drop followed by a huge "Wow!"

Everything - from the design, to the fabric, to the color, to the embellishment - they were all so modernly and beautifully done. It was something so unique that it was seared on my mind as a major fashion moment.

It was a moment that I happily relived last Sunday when I saw this:

Yes! It was the exact same dress that Cate Blanchett wore, now on display at Isetan in Shinjuku.

Needless to say, my jaw dropped and I had to let out a huge "Wow!"

Pretty Happy Woman

Among the many Oscar speeches that I've seen and heard throughout the years, one of the most earnest, most honest, funniest and most inspiring has to be Julia Roberts' speech when she won for "Erin Brockovich" in 2001.



Listening to her speech was like riding a rollercoaster. It was one emotion after the other, but ending up with a feeling of gratification and exhilaration.

She was so good in this, she should win another one again.

Cate the Great!

Finally, Cate Blanchett wins a Best Actress Oscar! I still feel that she won her first one in 1999 for "Elizabeth."

Looking forward to more greatness from her.

Bring out the popcorn!

Once again, the most awaited time for movie buffs has arrived.

It's the Oscars!

I'm looking forward to this year's awards, particularly because I think this is the year that Cate the great will finally get her Best Actress Oscar. (She really should've gotten it in 1999 for "Elizabeth.')

Plus, Ellen is hosting again!

Expect people to go on leave tomorrow morning. And expect microwavable popcorn sales to shoot up.

No buts for The Butler

There's a lot of Oscar buzz for this film, especially for Forest Whitaker who plays the title role. And after seeing the trailer, I see why:



It feels like The Butler will be serving up some Oscars next year.

Heck, I'd watch it for Julia Roberts alone.

My life as a Streep-er

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Meryl Streep's work. From her earlier movies (early for me, at least) such as "Death Becomes Her" and "Bridges of Madison County," to her more recent gems like "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Mamma Mia," it really seems like Meryl really can do no wrong.

This year, she received her 17th - yes, seven freakin' teenth - Oscar nomination. Who gets something like that?

Meryl Streep. That's who.

Unfortunately, the favorite to win Best Actress for the Oscars this year is Viola Davis. And yes, it would be nice if she wins. But last night, when Mark and I were talking, we were secretly hoping for an upset. We really wanted Meryl to win.

And guess what? It's an upset!



Her 3rd Oscar after 17 nominations. Way to go!

Looking forward to seeing you on the Oscar stage again next year.

Tough Call

They've announced the nominees for the 2012 Oscars, and I find myself in a dilemma for the Best Supporting Actress category.



As much as I adore Octavia Spencer, another actress in the running is Melissa McCarthy. And she was just HILARIOUS in "Bridesmaids." Her turn as a butch acting, gun-toting, redneck talking Bridesmaid was simply brilliant! And since she was snubbed by the Globes, maybe the Oscars are giving her that much deserved win.

Decisions, decisions.

Oh, Octavia.

I have much admiration for supporting stars in Hollywood. They put in as much work as the big stars, but they do it for less pay. But when you see them act in the film or TV series, you can see how much they put in into the scene, even if they're just relegated as a support or just put in the background.

Aside from Regina King, one of my favorite supporting actresses is Octavia Spencer. She's often typecast as a comic relief, and one of my favorite Octavia performances was in Ugly Betty. She played the woman obsessed with Betty's Father, Nacho.

And just as you're thinking that she'll just be another high-impact but not noticed star, Octavia Spencer just won a Golden Globes tonight!
