Mag-nificent

It's been 4 years since I've seen a US Vogue Magazine IRL.

Aside from the fact that a lot of my former magazine haunts have closed, NBS whittled down their magazine offering to a few titles. Unfortunately, US Vogue was one of the titles they dropped.

But thanks to Biboy, I've held my first US Vogue issue in 4 years!

Oh, Vogue, I've missed you so.

(Bath and) Body Rocks!

The box that Biboy sent from the U.S. is finally here!

I’ve been waiting for it because of this:

My sale stash of Bath and Body Works!

Gosh, my room will look like a mini-Store after unpacking.

A tale of 2 Cities

When I bought these 2 shirts on SheIn, it was mainly because of the color and that vintage touristy print.

Then it struck me once the shirts were delivered. These 2 cities have a role in our lives. Ate Lissa and family live in Houston, while Biboy and family have been living in Atlanta the past 20 years.

How’s that for happy coincidences?.

Two wonderful

Two years!

That's how long it took for Biboy, Liz and family to finally come home and visit.

They were originally scheduled to be in MNL in May-June of 2020. But we all know what happened. And we all know how that pretty much derailed travel plans around the globe.

But thankfully, and finally, they were able to travel to the Philippines! Aside from spending time with us, they were lucky enough to spend time with Liz's relatives in Cebu, our relatives in Bicol, and have a quick stop at Boracay while they were at it.

And today, the two-year delayed celebration of Liz's birthday finally happened!

It was great to see the Inciong family again after so many years. It was awesome that Liz finally got to have her celebration surrounded by family and friends. And it was even more awesome that 6 out of 7 of the Regalado-Morales gang were finally together!

Looking forward to next year when Ate Lissa will finally be able to come home, too! That would be even more wonderful!

Bi(rthday)boy

It’s Biboy’s Birthday today!

Last year, he was supposed to come home so he can celebrate his birthday with us. But back then, the vaccinations haven’t started and travel was still quite restricted. This year, the whole fam is planning to come home in May so they can have a belated celebration here with the whole clan.

And while waiting for that, he’s celebrating his birthday with the fam. And hopefully in a few months, our faces will be in this photo as well.

Happy Birthday Biboy!

Balancing act

I really miss buying and wearing New Balance shoes!

Thankfully, Biboy sent over a new pair last month and i’ve been wearing it even if i’m not really going anywhere. Harhar!

Soon, these shoes will be out and about.

24 Carrot Magic

While I've always known Oreo as chocolate cookies with cream filling, I'm always up to try new flavours and variants.

One of my favourites is the Red Velvet Oreo that I discovered in the US a few years ago. That's why I bought a lot of them and brought them home to Manila.

When Biboy sent me Carrot Cake Oreos, I was genuinely curious how it tasted.

Now that I've tried it, my verdict is:

OREO. CARROT. CAKE. IS. DA. BOMB!

The decision that I need to make now is if I'll finish this in one go or try to save as much of it as possible.

Decisions, decisions.

Exciting days ahead!

Printed Matter: Boutique Batik

Having stayed in Indonesia for short assignments several times, I've always appreciated the intricacy and art that goes into their Batik prints.

During my trips there, I'd always bring home a few yards of that fabric. Whether it's for a men's shirt or a dress for Mom or the Ates, the beauty of the print would always shine through and make the garment be much more visually interesting.

That's why the first time this print popped up on my feed, my eyes were drawn to it.

It had a batik feel to it, albeit more modern. It's like a traditional batik with a California boutique vibe.

That print, of course, is the material for this Elizabeth and James dress which is still part of the stash that Ate Lissa and Biboy sent early this year.

It's a perfect print - and dress - to welcome summer.

Home, (Elizabeth and) James, Home

While Kohl's is continents away, siblings have a way of bridging that gap.

Thanks to the efforts of Ate Lissa in UT and Biboy in GA, the brand that I've been eyeing for a while now has actually reached our shores, and our home!

Yup! My Elizabeth and James haul has finally arrived!

And I'm so excited about it!

FMM: Always believe in...

Yes, today's Friday Magic Madness song is a mega-hit from the 80s that's a long time coming:

And it's also a very apt song in celebration of Biboy's birthday. Sung by his fave British group, no less.

Quoting 2 Spandau Ballet songs: I know this much as true, you are Gold, Bibs!

In more ways than one.

Golden Moments

When we were kids, Biboy and I were the quintessential "cat and dog."

Our fights back then were very "kiddie," but epic! Usually, it would be about very shallow things - like toys, games, the TV, stuff like that. These would vary from fist fights, hiding each other's toys, chasing each other down Scout Gandia, and other things that - looking back - make be chuckle.

Maybe it was because we were opposites in a lot of ways. He liked Spandau Ballet while I preferred Duran Duran. He listened to Madonna while I'd listen to Cyndi Lauper. When musicians banded together to help the famine in Africa, he was team "Band Aid," while I was team "USA for Africa." Robot-wise, he liked Mazinger Z while I'm a Voltes V fan.

Not that we were complete opposites, though. We both liked BMX biking, Lego, Questor Magazines, and playing out in the street with the rest of the Gandia kids. We'd spend our summers biking around the Scout area, going to Baraquiel's Bike Shop along Morato, and trying out different "exhibitions" on our bikes.

As we grew older, our "cat and dog" slowly became "birds of the same feather." We got along more, and realized that we have a lot more in common. In High School, we both went to LSQC and he was a batch ahead of me. Because of this, he would protect me from bullying and would often have his classmates to help. In college, even if we went to different schools, we helped each other and had each other's back.

Eventually, we graduated and started working. He worked in Laguna, Bulacan, and eventually moved to Davao City. We would always look forward to his visits to Manila because it was the first time one of our siblings moved away. But it's true that distance makes the heart grow fonder, because we felt closer even if we were islands apart.

In 1996, he got married and made me his Best Man. That was really an honour! I also helped out in organizing his wedding, which was what inspired me to eventually be a part-time wedding planner.

Then, in 2002, he moved with his whole family to GA, which was way, way farther than Davao.

Just like when he moved to Davao, his move to the US kept us closer. After all, we had Ooma and the Internet. We also looked forward to our trips to GA to visit him, and his trips to MNL to visit us.

Despite the many visits, one stood out the most. In 2019, when I got sick, he dropped everything and flew to Manila to check-up on me. And that meant the world - and the universe - to me. It was one of the reasons why I got better as fast as I did, seeing Biboy and having him around for weeks.

As Biboy celebrates his Golden year today, it makes me break out in a big smile while remembering all these moments shared together. From our "cat and dog" childhood to our "birds of the same feather, flock together" adulthood.

These moments make me extremely grateful to have a brother who's worth his weight in Gold!

Happy Golden Birthday, Biboy! Let's celebrate soon!

FMM: Old and Gold

For some strange reason, there's an old song (literally) from Barry Manilow that reminds me of Biboy.

The title? "The Old Songs." And I'm sure you've encountered this song at some point in your life.

Good thing today is a day of old songs.

Birthday (Bi)boy!

It's been a while since we last celebrated Biboy's birthday as a family, and in Manila, that's why today's lunch was special.

Biboy is in Manila for a week long trip, and fortunately, it coincided with this birthday. So, it was off to a sumptuous, Pinoy lunch to celebrate the occasion.

Happy Birthday, Bibs! Glad you're here to celebrate this day with us.

Super Supper

Whenever I go and visit Biboy's house in the US, there's one house fixture that never fails to put a smile on my face when I see it.

This Last Supper has been in the family for generations.

It was in our Grandparent's house. Then it went to our house. And now it's with Biboy.

If my mental math is correct (but don't trust me when it comes to math,) this Last Supper might be nearing 100 years old!

Super!

Not Ruined

When the sibs said that we'll head off to Macau on Saturday, it was greeted by excitement on their part. And dread on mine.

Saturday trips to Macau can be chaotic, as I've experienced personally when I was still living in HKG. Usually, on weekends, tourists from HKG, Mainland China, and the rest of the world, descend upon the small island. That's why everything becomes difficult - getting ferry tickets, finding cabs, moving around, the whole shindig.

Despite those worries, we decided to push through and enjoy the sights, sounds and free grub in Macau.

At the onset, there were already hitches and glitches. When we got to the China Ferry Terminal at 11:00am, it turned out that the earliest ferry tickets we could get was at 5pm! Which meant we'd lose an entire day.

Experience taught me, though, that there are scalpers who sell ferry tickets, albeit more expensive. We found one, and he was selling a one-way ticket for HK$250! (The regular price is HK$170.) Not one to be fooled, I looked around for other scalpers until I found a guy who sold tickets for the 12:15pm sailing for only HK$180. Not bad.

We got there past 1pm and decided to go straight to The Venetian. And my gosh! The crowds were just wild! It was like there were tens of thousands of people crammed in one casino! Jostling, pushing and herding became the norm. Thankfully, we were able to get out in one piece.

Next Stop, Senado Square and The Ruins of St. Paul.

Again, tens of thousands of people in one small area. Even Biboy and Liz were shocked at the sight of so many people. The crowd was so thick and unruly that we almost weren't able to find Ate Bullet and family. Thankfully, we were able to locate each other, and we all made our way to the ruins.

It was super difficult to find a spot to have a decent photo taken since there were so many people. We then decided to wait it out, and after half an hour, the crowds thinned, and we were able to have our group shot taken.

By 7:00pm, Biboy and family, as well as myself, were on a ferry back to HKG.

It was a short, frenetic and tiring trip. But because it was a short, frenetic and tiring trip with family, it was all worth it.

FMM: Happy Friday

Today's Friday Magic Madness song is inspired by 2 things.

First, it's inspired by the Christmas display at Times Square in Causeway Bay. Second, it's inspired by the fact that I'm traveling around HKG with my siblings and other family members.

In these circumstances, you can't help but feel "Happiness."

Being with family and listening to this classic song from "You're a good man, Charlie Brown."

It's truly a Happy Friday.

Sib Love!

Last year, we had a mini-sibling reunion in Atlanta with 4 of us present - Kuya Marv, Ate Lissa, Biboy and myself. Ate Bullet wasn't able to join due to the fact that she wasn't able to get her US Visa renewed in time.

This year, another mini-sibling reunion just happened, and Ate Bullet is now in it!

Ate Bullet, Biboy and I planned this HKG trip a little over a month ago, and now we're here!

I just love mini-reunions like this!

Four Spice!

And Biboy pulled through! Woot!

In a few months, these dresses will be spicing Ate's life.
