FMM: Stoned
Been seeing a lot of Cyndi Lauper on youtube these days.
She's been doing the rounds to promote her farewell tour. It was a surprise at first, but when she mentioned that she's already 70 years old and just wants to choose her gigs, it was totally understandable.
Let me just pause for a moment to marvel at the fact that she's 70 years old! And she doesn't look it!
So, for today's Friday Magic Madness song, let me play one of her underrated songs from 1992.
"The World is Stone," isn't as popular as her mega hits. But there's something about this song that's both haunting and lyrical. And it showcases her vocal prowess beautifully.
This is one of the reasons why I'm such a huge fan of her.

FMM: Rainy days
For today’s Friday Magic Madness, my admiration for Cyndi Lauper continues.
Since it has been raining the past week, this reminded me of yet another song from the “Hat Full of Stars” album. It’s another song that was consistently on repeat, both then and now.
“Who let in the Rain” is such a soothing song with such expressive lyrics. Classic Cyndi.
For her, I wouldn’t mind letting not the rain.

FMM: Seeing Stars
In terms of her discography, it's common knowledge that "She's so Unusual" is what propelled Cyndi Lauper to pop stardom. After it was launched in 1983, the album churned out hit after hit after hit.
Being a fan of Cyndi, that album is what made me love her and her music.
But it was her 1993 album "Hat Full of Stars" that made me adore her.
Unlike her 80s sound, this album showcased more of Cyndi's depth and maturity as an artist. From the lyrics to the themes to the videos, it was great to see her grow so much as an artist.
I'm a fan of almost all the songs in that album, and the carrier single, "Hat Full of Stars" is today's Friday Magic Madness song:
It isn't hard to see why I'm star-struck over this.

FMM: Great Hole of China
Because it's Chinese New Year this weekend, today's Friday Magic Madness song is inspired by this country where the celebration originated.
No, it's not a Canto-pop song or a traditional Chinese song. It's actually a song from my fave 80s diva, Cyndi Lauper!
This song wasn't as big a hit as her other iconic ditties like "Girls just wanna have fun" or "Time After Time," or even "She Bop." But the first time this song played on-air, it caught my ear and led me to buy a cassette tape back in 1988. It's a song that'll only sound familiar if, like me, you're a Cyndi fan.
"Hole in my Heart, (all the way to China)" has the same upbeat instrumentation and energy of Cyndi's songs. And the premise of having a hole in your heart that goes all the way to China was quirky and clever.
That's a classic and another great song from Cyndi!

Two C is to believe
Lately, I've been binge watching "The Kennedy Center Honors" on youtube. It's such a wonderful sight to watch all these American Icons being recognized for their work in the arts.
One of the most all-time favouritest moments from the many awards shows was the 2018 version.
This was the year when 2 iconic "Cs" - both my all-time faves - shared one stage.
It was the year when Cher was honoured, and one of the performers who sang her a tribute is the 80s pop-rock icon, Cyndi Lauper!
The interaction of Cher and Cyndi was adorable. Especially the part when Cher shouted at Cyndi: "You said you were in LA!"
Believe me, I've watched this dozens of times already. And I don't have any intentions of stopping.

FMM: Hole lotta fun!
Today is Chinese New Year! And I thought of playing a Friday Magic Madness song that has some reference to the occasion.
Good thing, there's Cyndi Lauper! One of my all-time favorite artists.
She had this 1988 song called "Hole in my Heart." And when asked where the hole leads to?
It leads all the way to China!
Mission accomplished!

FMM: That's Hat
One of my favorite Cyndi Lauper songs is this very beautiful and quiet song from her 1992 album. It's not as mainstream as her other hits, but it's a big hit in my playlist. Both then and now.
After hearing "Hat full of Stars" again, I wish Cyndi Lauper would go back to Manila and have a concert, too.
